Titleist AP2 712 Irons

The Titleist AP2 712 irons are a multi-material iron designed for the serious mid to low handicap golfer.

The AP2 712 irons have a more square profile than before, a feature specifically requested by Titleist's Tour players. A forged carbon steel head is aided by a high-density tungsten weight, creating increased playability. Titleist wanted to improve distance control and achieve a more consistent ball speed with the 712 AP2 irons. This was done by increasing the MOI by 7%, without impacting workability or control. A dual cavity design pushes weight to the perimeter for playability without losing the ability to shape shots.

The Tuned Feel System is a co-molded medallion of soft elastomer and aluminium plate. This tuned cavity insert has been specifically designed to improve the sound and feel of the AP2 irons.

Titleist also improved the control and turf interaction by reducing the sole bounce and adding a smaller sole width on the 8-iron, 9-iron and PW. The small progressive offset design in the Titleist 712 AP2s is designed for improved shot control throughout the set.

What Golfalot Says

The Titleist AP2 712 irons feature a dual tungsten weighting in the sole of the club that accounts for 20% of the overal weight of the clubhead. This increases the MOI of the club by 7% without having to make the head longer, which means that it is very forgiving for its size and Titleist claim that it has a 6% smaller disperson than the previoius AP2 model.

This is certainly a very easy club to hit. At address the offset is larger than in the Titleist AP1 Irons but not so much that it will put better players off. The head size is also larger and inspires a lot of confidence at address withouth appearing too chunky. The 712 AP2s are a joy to hit and the True Temper Dynamic XP shaft is light and lovely to use.

The sound and feel at impact is excellent and the trajectory was not much higher than the AP1s. Indeed we could see a lot of single figure golfers using these irons or certainly blending in the longer irons with the shorter irons from the AP1 set. The AP2 irons are a great set and well worth a test if you are as Titliest say, a serious golfer, whatever your handicap.

AP2 is one of the best Titleist irons ever, cruel ball hit, solid feel and control. Allowed to control the ball. If you have not tried it, do it.
