TaylorMade TP Red Golf Ball

The TaylorMade TP Red golf ball is a three-piece ball constructed of an NdV4 core, multi-blend ionomer mantle and ultra-thin thermoset urethane cover. Additionally, the TaylorMade TP Red employs an advanced new PDP (pentangular di-pyramid) dimple design. The mantle in the TP Red fulfils two critical functions. One, it helps regulate each ball's launch angle off both the driver and the irons. Two, its high-COR compound works with the core to boost ball velocity, making the high-speed qualities built into each model accessible to not just higher swing speeds but average swing speeds, as well. TaylorMade's proprietary and patented thermoset urethane cover delivers a tour-calibre blend of spin, soft feel and superior durability. Thermoset urethane is created by mixing numerous ingredients that react chemically, generating heat and which combine to create a new material that's stronger than the sum of its parts.

The TaylorMade TP Red incorporates a larger core (1.510" diameter) and thinner mantle (.055" thick) than the TP Black and this larger core and thinner mantle promotes a low spin-rate off the driver and a slightly lower, tour-like launch angle off every club in the bag, which promotes increased control. Likewise, the thinner mantle promotes a slightly softer sound and feel. Average players will be able to enjoy many of the performance benefits of the TP Red because the ball speed is engineered to promote is a function of the collaboration of the firm ionomer mantle and soft-yet-fast core, not the core alone, making their speed-producing capabilities accessible to even slower swingers. The TaylorMade logo on the TP Red is stamped horizontally on the seam of the golf ball. This is at the request of players who prefer to align the seam with the target-line when putting. Many such players find it distracting when the logo is stamped either perpendicular or at an angle to the seam.

What Golfalot Says

Having seen many pretenders to the ProV1 throne come and go, it was easy to be sceptical about the TaylorMade TP Red ball's claims. However for once the ball has lived up to the hype. The TP Red is a little softer feeling than the TP Black and it and performs very well in all areas. Distance is good and the feel on and around the greens was very good. We attended a TaylorMade demonstration with Paul McGinley and he did manage to get more ball speed (and hence distance - about 5-7 yards) from the driver than he did with the main rival ball and it is certainly no shorter in our experience. The big plus for us was that the cover of the TaylorMade TP Red was as durable as the ProV1, which is where a lot of other balls have fallen down. Definitely an alternative, but better than - well, that will be down to your personal preference.

I bought a dozen TaylorMade TP Red balls from the States a few weeks ago and have tried them on and off since. They are very much like the Titleist Pro V1 balls but go about five/ ten yards further. They spin quite well and sit down nicely and also feel good when putting. I haven't played them enough to make a decision on whether to ditch my Pro V1 golf balls yet but the early signs are very encouraging.

If you are looking to play something other than a Pro-V1, you won't go far wrong with the TaylorMade TP Red ball. It has a long and penetrating flight with the woods and delivers excellent spin with irons. It has a fantastically soft feel, but the skin is very durable. 18 holes with this and I find it only has some minor scuffs, even with my sharp grooved wedges. Is it better than the Pro-V1? It's hard to say and ultimately it will come down to subtle personal preferences, but I find it very difficult to fault so have loaded my bag with them.
