The TaylorMade TP Black golf ball is a three-piece ball constructed of an NdV4 core, multi-blend ionomer mantle and ultra-thin thermoset urethane cover. Additionally, the TaylorMade TP Black employs an advanced new PDP (pentangular di-pyramid) dimple design. The mantle in the TP Black fulfils two critical functions. One, it helps regulate each ball's launch angle off both the driver and the irons. Two, its high-COR compound works with the core to boost ball velocity, making the high-speed qualities built into each model accessible to not just higher swing speeds but average swing speeds, as well. TaylorMade's proprietary and patented thermoset urethane cover delivers a tour-calibre blend of spin, soft feel and superior durability. Thermoset urethane is created by mixing numerous ingredients that react chemically, generating heat and which combine to create a new material that's stronger than the sum of its parts.

The TaylorMade TP Black incorporates a smaller core (1.480" diameter) and thicker mantle (.070" thick) than the TP Red and this thicker mantle permits the ball to slide up the clubface a fraction at impact for a higher launch angle, while the thicker mantle and smaller core work together to promote an even lower rate of driver-spin. That combination of higher launch angle and lower spin-rate helps promotes increased carry and distance. Average players will be able to enjoy many of the performance benefits of the TaylorMade TP Black because the ball speed is engineered to promote is a function of the collaboration of the firm ionomer mantle and soft-yet-fast core, not the core alone, making their speed-producing capabilities accessible to even slower swingers. The TaylorMade logo on the TP Black is stamped horizontally on the seam. This is at the request of players who prefer to align the seam with the target-line when putting. Many such players find it distracting when the logo is stamped either perpendicular or at an angle to the seam.

TaylorMade TP Black Golf Ball Review

Having seen many pretenders to the ProV1 throne come and go, it was easy to be sceptical about the TaylorMade TP Black ball's claims. However for once the ball has lived up to the hype. The TP Black is a little firmer feeling than the TP Red and it performs very well in all areas. Distance is good and the feel on and around the greens was very similar to the ProV1, which is what it is lined up against. The big plus for us was that the cover of the TaylorMade TP Black was as durable as the ProV1, which is where a lot of other balls have fallen down. Definitely an alternative, but better than - well, that will be down to your personal preference.

The TaylorMade TP Black ball is very soft and great for putting and around the green. However, when you catch it with a high spin wedge like the Titleist Vokey design, it scratches badly. Don’t expect to get through a round with any less than 3-4 of these balls. Overall, great for feel but poor for durability.
