TaylorMade R9 TP Irons

4.5 stars out of 5 (Based on 4 reviews)

The TaylorMade R9 TP iron retains the classic look of a traditional iron while incorporating a variety of technical breakthrough designed to enhance performance and help those players playing at the top level of golf or those who are aiming to reach the top level. The compact head includes a semi-straight leading edge, semi-square toe, thin topline and a cambered thin sole. Nick Faldo has influenced the way in which the hosel blends with the leading edge and face to produce a classic looking club that looks as good as it plays.

The longer R9 TP irons feature TaylorMade’s Velocity Control Chamber which placed an enclosed compartment behind the clubface allowing a large area of the face to be unsupported. This increased COR to help with distance while the Chamber’s foam filling offers great sound and feel at impact. The Velocity Control Chamber also allows the weight to redistributed to give the R9 TP irons an exceptionally low centre of gravity and high moment of inertia which helps you launch them high and long.

The TaylorMade R9 TP irons also feature progressive face thickness which allows the COR to increase in the middle and long irons and feel to increase in the short irons. TaylorMade’s Inverted Cone Technology which promotes higher ball speed on off-centre hits to promote consistent distance control. Players can be confident that each R9 iron will deliver the expected distance on each swing.

The perimeter weighted clubhead offers a larger hitting area than the successful Tour Preferred irons, which works with the Velocity Control Chamber to make the longer irons much easier to hit. TaylorMade are confident that many players will reintroduce the 2 and 3 iron into their golf bag when they discover how easy to hit the R9 TP irons are. The TaylorMade R9 TP irons include KBS Tour Series steel shafts and are fully conforming with the 2010 groove rules.

TaylorMade R9 TP Irons Review

As soon as the TaylorMade R9 TP iron came out of the box we were immediately impressed with the clean lines of the club and the classy look at address. In terms of a better players club these heads are oversized, but we think that is a good thing as this translates into more forgiveness. It's a fine line between creating a better players iron that is forgiving but performs well and looks like a blade, but in the R9 TP TaylorMade have pulled it off. You can see Nick Faldo's influence in the design and the extra grind on the back of the sole that goes right around the head, not only looks good and makes the head look more compact, but also helps the club through the turf at impact.

The R9 TP heads look and sound very solid and at impact they felt that way too. Although the feel was very good for a cast head, it is not quite the same as a forged iron and there are a couple of oversized forged irons around that will have you smiling more than these.

There is a trade off between forgiveness and feel but in this sector of the market this is what better players will look for. The trajectory was a little on the high side for a better players iron, especially in the mid to long irons where the weight extends further to the back of the clubhead. We were also not over the moon about the KBS shaft but that is more a personal thing and TaylorMade's excellent custom fitting options should be able to get the right shaft for you. The TaylorMade R9 TP iron has the potential to be a category killer and with a bit more feel it would be, but for now we would have to say it's one of the best and worth a try.
