TaylorMade R9 SuperTri Driver

4 stars out of 5 (Based on 4 reviews)

The TaylorMade R9 SuperTri driver combines the best of the original R9 driver with the best of the R9 460 driver to deliver a club that offers a maximum sized driver that delivers incredible distance and wonderful forgiveness. As well as boasting the maximum 460cc head the R9 SuperTri also features the winning combination of Flight Control Technology (FCT) and Movable Weight Technology (MWT).

When the R9 and R9 460 were released TaylorMade’s engineers had not yet discovered a way of combining the best element of both clubs. Now they have and the result is the R9 SuperTri. To allow a 460cc club head to accommodate both Movable Weight Technology and Flight Control Technology TaylorMade had to find a way of saving weight and they have managed to do this by using their own Ultra-Thin Wall technology more effectively throughout the club and reducing the weight of the Flight Control Technology mechanism by some three grams.

The large head of the R9 SuperTri is supremely forgiving and, with the centre of gravity shifted backwards, it’s never been easier to launch the ball high and with more spin. The result is longer drives with the 75 yard side-to-side change of the Movable Weight Technology offer total control. Even off centre hits deliver excellent distance thanks to the Inverted Cone Technology at the back of the clubface which promoted faster ball speeds even when you don’t hit it quite flush.

The TaylorMade R9 SuperTri golf driver also features a reshaped crown that helps to improve the aerodynamics of the club while also offering the deepest clubface that TaylorMade have ever produced in a MWT driver. The new shape is augmented by a black colour scheme that marks a welcome return for the black PVD clubface that so impressed in the r7 SuperQuad driver.

The TaylorMade R9 SuperTri comes with a Fujikara Motore 60-gram shaft which is both lighter and easier to launch than the Motore 65 that was used in the R9 driver. The R9 SuperTri is the most advanced dirver that TaylorMade have ever produced and offers the level of high performance that you would expect from a TaylorMade driver.

TaylorMade R9 SuperTri Driver Review

The TaylorMade R9 SuperTri driver has a pretty cool look and a more standard length Fujikura Motore driver shaft which is a lot better than the previous stock TaylorMade shafts. The Motore shaft is 5 grams lighter than the shaft in the R9 driver and you really notice the difference. The performance of the club is excellent with pretty good forgiveness across the face and the trajectory, sound and feel was excellent. Ths R9 SuperTri driver is all about adjustability though and moving the Flight Control settings to adjust the angle of the face cetrainly did affect the ball flight very well. The MWT moveable weights are a little more subtle at influencing ball flight and we would suggest using the FCT first and then refine it with the MWT.

The range of settings can create a wide range of shot shapes over a range of 75 yards, although more of then are aimed at making the ball go left than right as TaylorMade say that is because most golfers slice the ball. Closing the face for a draw will actually increase the loft and opening will decrease the loft so if you plan to make use of these settings make sure you by the right loft in advance. If you plan to open the face then 10.5 degrees would be the lowest we would go as the 9.5 face on the open setting went pretty low unless you have a tour level of swing speed.

The dark finish and sole design of the R9 SuperTri give a powerful and aggressive look to match the performance. This is an all signing all dancing adjustable driver and there is very little to fault....apart from the price. The TaylorMade R9 SuperTri may have more options than other adjustable drivers, but it is in the super premium end of the market and in terms of value for money we are going to have to mark it down a star as, particularly if you are not going to change the settings much, there are other drivers around that perform just as well for significantly less. You pays your money and takes your choice...

I tried out a 10.5 degree, regular shaft model of the TaylorMade R9 SuperTri driver. I immediately felt in control of proceedings on the tee - although in part this was due to simply feeling much more comfortable than I did with TaylorMade's Burner Superfast model.

The adjustable element worked quickly and simply. But, as with all adjustable drivers, I think I would experiment on the range to find the setting I was more comfortable with and stick with that. If you wanted to tinker more often then this is certainly the club to do it with and there is definitely an appreciable difference between settings.

I also liked the looks which are refreshingly understated and it was hard to find fault with performance. I might be tempted to find a driver with a bit of added forgiveness but it was hard to find fault with this solid driver

One thought though: are you paying the TaylorMade premium for an adjustability gimmick that you won't use that much? If you think that's a risk you might find more value for money elsewhere. A worthy if expensive club, the R9 SuperTri is hard to fault but also difficult to fall in love with!
