TaylorMade R580XD Graphite Shaft Driver

The XD stands for 'extra distance, but TaylorMade say it is more than that. They say each design has been tweaked and tuned up, transforming the club into a more muscular, more forgiving, more powerful version of its former self. Compared to the normal clubs, the XD versions feature a bigger head size, a deeper clubface and a new soleplate design for a deeper CG (Centre of Gravity), resulting in improved launch conditions, a larger sweet spot and larger hitting area above the CG. The R580XD comes with a 440cc head size and is fitted with ultra light graphite shafts to promote a higher trajectory, a longer carry and a faster swing speed. Because they offer such a large hitting area above the CG, players will be able to hit more shots that achieve a high launch angle and low spin-rate, which is the optimum combination for achieving maximum distance. Making a large-headed driver isn't difficult, but a key problem inherent to a large metal wood head is that the CG is too far forward, because it's difficult to achieve the kind of low, deep CG needed. TaylorMade's Inverted Cone Technology, allows for a low, deep CG and contributing tremendously to the overall performance of these new clubs.

What Golfalot Says

The XD version of the popular R580 does exactly what it says on the tin. In our test the club was very easy to hit and the ball certainly stayed hit - great distance! Unlike the normal R580, the flight of the ball seemed slightly lower, although it is still higher than average. The club is designed to do this, so it is not the ideal club for hitting drives into the wind. The club sits well at address and looks great, so you don't feel like it is at all oversized. The ultralight shaft performs well and we liked the red flash at the top of the shaft to give it a sharp look. Players with very high swing speeds may find they need a stiffer version of this standard stiff shaft as the club had a tendency to turn the ball over when swung really hard. Overall though a great club, but if you are buying it for the long term, be aware that certain versions will be illegal for competitive use from 1 January 2008. Check the R&A website for more details.

I have the TaylorMade R580XD in a 9.5 degree loft with an extra stiff shaft and it is very reliable. It has a high face and is great for windy days. The best TaylorMade driver I reckon.

I have tried out the Taylor Made R580 XD driver and the R7Draw. I have to say that the striking force that comes from both clubs is awesome.!!! I currently own a Mizuno Mp001 and it goes vey nicely. The TaylorMade R580 XD combines forgivenss and fantastic flight and accuracy. It off center hits still go very nicely and there is not complaints what so ever. The only negative is that this club will soon be illlegal. I tended to get to much back spin on the ball and it fell consitanly shorter than its counterpart but none the less and awesome club! If you want something fantastic for this next year thats available cheapyl on the market i would recommend this club...for now!
