Like the R500 Series drivers, the new fairway woods from TaylorMade use the same construction techniques to increase the size of the clubheads. The new clubs have a COR of .810 and a 30 percent greater moment of inertia (MOI) than the 300 Series fairway woods, producing increased forgiveness on miss-hits. A sleek sole design that glides through a variety of lie conditions, and that works with the high MOI to make the R580 fairway woods extremely easy to hit.

TaylorMade R580 5 Wood Graphite Shaft Fairway Wood Review

Like TaylorMade claim, these fairway woods are very easy to hit. The 5-wood is particularly good from all lies, including the semi-rough and it glides through the grass to get the ball airbourne with the minimum of ease. Like the driver, the R580 fairway wood is deisgned to get the ball high in the air and this is fine if you are not hitting into the wind. If you really got for it into the wind the ball can balloon a little, but this is really a club for the higher handicapper, so this may not be a problem. It looks good and sits well so we would recommend this for anyone who finds fairway woods tricky to use.

The TaylorMade R5 Series fairway woods are featured in the Today's Golfer equipment guide in the "Best of the Rest" listing just outside the top 6. What attracted me was the Titanium face, rare in fairway woods. The reliable distance and control have been a god-send, in fact I was so pleased with my TaylorMade R580 5 Wood, I also bought the R580 3 Wood.

Bought the TaylorMade R580 5 wood as a replacement for an old steel thing and what a difference it made. Shots are all longer (even the crap ones) but it takes some adjustment to get the best out of it. You need to rsist the temptation to over hit the club or inconsistent ballooning shots will result. Sound is great off the clubface and the R580 fairway wood face is deep enough that you can hit it off a short tee without bother. One complaint - the headcover is too big and always looks like its going to fall off.
