The TaylorMade Burner Superfast fairway wood follows the same design keys as the Superfast driver with a deeper head front to back and a longer shaft for more distance.

The head was not as triangular as the driver and the Superfast fairway actually has a pretty traditional look, which we liked, although the red line colour scheme on the crown divided opinion.

At address the clubhead sat nicely behind the ball on both the fairway and in the semi rough although we think that extra depth of the head may give some players issues on very tight lies. The face was pretty forgiving and the feel and sound at impact was excellent.

The Superfast range is about distance over accuracy and to that end TaylorMade have used a longer lighter shaft in the fairways for more clubhead speed.

In the 3-wood this was quite noticeable, but it was not so bad in the shorter woods in the range so try before you buy as some may struggle with this.

Despite the weight being low and deep the trajectory of this club was very good and the TaylorMade Burner Superfast is a good fairway for mid to high handicappers looking for an extra few yards.

I much preferred the Burner SuperFast woods to the driver from the same range. On the looks front the fairways win hands down with a much more traditional look that is recognisably a classic golf club design rather than a prop rejected from a science fiction film.

And the performance didn't disappoint either. I felt the 3 wood was reliable and consistent off the turf. Of late I've got out of the habit of using my three wood off the fairway (thanks to the hybrids sneaking into my bag) but I really rated the performance of the Burner Superfast.

But, for my money, the three wood really comes into its own off the tee where it is consistently long and straight. With this in your bag you'd have a perfect fallback if your big stick was letting you down - I think there would probably be days when I didn't even look at my driver if I had this in my bag! Impressive.
