Ping Anser Irons

3.5 stars out of 5 (Based on 2 reviews)

The Ping Anser irons are for the passionate golfer who enjoys an iron that provides them with clean lines, enhanced workability, extreme accuracy and a good amount of forgiveness.

The classic shape and satin chrome finish produce a traditional looking forged iron. A 8620 steel body combines a dense tungsten sole weight and internal cavity optimising the clubhead's centre of gravity and increase MOI.

The progressive stabilising bar technology throughout the Anser set produces predictable ball flights. The longer iron bars are wider and thinner, lowering the centre of gravity to the launch the ball higher, whilst the bars get more vertical and thicker into the short irons for more penetrating, controlled trajectories with higher spin.

The size of the Anser irons also changes progressively through the set. The larger long irons promote forgiveness and a high launch, and the smaller short irons are designed for precise, consistent shot making.

Ping Anser Irons Review

The Ping Anser irons are the second version of the forged Anser iron that was introduced in 2010. The 2012 Anser iron is also forged and the feel is still very good.

The head features a new design with a hollow sole and a progressive stablising bar that changes as you go through the set. It looks pretty good and the trajectory from all the irons is great. It is very easy to hit all the irons and thankfully the progressively smaller clubheads are still are good size as you reach the short irons, unlike Ping sets of the past.

Ping say the forgiveness from the Anser Forged is a little less than the Ping i20, but more than the Ping S56 and we would go along with that. Certainly when comparing the Anser and i20 iron together on the range, the i20 did seem easier to hit and had a slightly higher trajectory. This could also be because standard steel shaft is the Project X Rifle shaft and this is a bit more work than the CFS from the i20s.

There is also fractionally less offset than the i20's so if you are low single figures you may prefer the look of the Anser irons. You may not prefer the price which is double that for a set of i20 irons and really there is not much difference in performance, hence the loss of a star.

Not surprisingly, Ping don't expect to sell many of these sets in the UK as they are aimed at more premium markets on the Continent and the Far East. However if you have more wedge than you know what to do with and want a quality Ping forging then you won't be disappointed.

I'm not crazy about the Ping Anser irons. They are very similar to the i20 irons in look and appeal, but didn't offer as much forgiveness.

The looks are nice and in keeping with a traditional Ping iron. They do have slightly less offset which is a nice touch, and a new Tour finish which was good.

I didn't get the feel I was expected from this new forged Anser model. The forgiveness was fairly minimal and I expect this will only find its way into the bags of Ping's Tour pros and top amateurs.

It is not a bad club by any means, the technology and looks are there, but the feel and forgiveness weren't in line with my expectations. Plus, at their high-price point, I think there are better options in the market.
