The Ping Tour wedge is another in a long line of classy looking Ping wedges that look more traditional than your usual Ping irons. It uses the same head as the Tour S wedge but with the new, wonderfully named Gorge grooves.
The Gorge grooves are milled to exacting standards and use the full width of the '2-circle' tolerance zone that the rules allow so that the edges are as vertical as possible, like most other wedes these days. This gives the Tour wedge more grip than the first version of the 2011 conforming grooves and is a good improvement.
The other big change is the use of 3 sole widths for different types of lie. The sole is already a little wider than the Ping Anser wedge, but the tapering of the sole and back edge on the Standard Sole does make it more playable than it looks. The Wide Sole versions are the new kids on the block and have marginally more offset (not that you can notice) and the same bounce over a wider area. The Thin Sole versions of the 58 and 60 models drop the bounce to 6 degrees and they are great for firmer lies, but we would have liked to see and 54 and 56 degree option too as not everyone plays on soft parkland courses all the time.
Finally the custom tuning port does improve the feel but this still feels like a cast wedge. The flight is a little lower as thanks to the design. Ping say that it is about 1.5 degrees lower than the Tour S version and that also helps the grip.
Overall this is a very solid wedge, which will go down well with Ping aficionados, but for the money there are a lot of excellent better player wedges around with the same feel, if not more.
