Nike VR_S Covert Utility Club

When you think of Nike Golf, you often think of Tiger Woods wearing his famous Sunday red in pursuit of victory. Well thanks to the Nike VR_S Covert hybrid, and the rest of the Covert range, you are likely to see even more red on golf courses in the future.

The eye-catching red colour on the VR_S Covert range is sure to catch the eye of golfers across the world, but we heard from Tom Stites, Nike's Director of Club Creation, on what is behind the red colour.

He said "With the combination of High Speed Cavity Back, FlexLoft, and NexCOR technology, we are able to maximise distance, control, and consistency for every club in the bag. Athletes now have the performance they demand, as well as adaptability for any condition."

Whilst the standard VR_S Covert hybrid model does not feature the Dual Axis adjustability (featured in the Tour version), it does contain the same NexCOR face as the rest of the Covert range. The high speed face varies thickness behind the clubface to produce faster ball speeds. Nike engineered the face specifically to offer more speed from the bottom half of the face, where they have found most golfers are likely to make contact.

Nike VR_S Covert Utility Club Review

The Nike VR_S Covert Hybrid is the best of the Covert range of woods. We love the red colour of the generous sized head although the white swoosh gets in the way for us.

There is a slight offset on the hosel at address, but not too much to put you off. If anything the sweep of the silver around the red probably accentuates the offset to appear more than it is.

The head is reasonably sized for a hybrid but it is the height of the club that we liked as this gives a large deep face that will suit mid to high handicap golfers.

This is a very easy club to hit and the trajectory is a good mid height flight. It sounded good even if the feel was a little on the dull side, which could be a result of the cavity on the back of the head. Nike claim the head offers more forgiveness on lower hits on the face and certainly the VR_S Covert hybrid did get the thinner strikes up into the air very well.

Much has been made of this cavity back design and it's hard to say whether it benefits or not, but the bottom line is that the Nike VR_S Covert Hybrid does the job well without shouting about it too much.
