Nike VR_S Covert Tour Driver

The Nike VR_S Covert Tour is the first USGA and R&A conforming driver to feature high-speed cavity back technology. Based around three technology platforms, the VR_S Covert is aimed at giving all golfers increased distance, control and forgiveness. The Tour 430cc head comes in a visually stunning iconic Nike Red and with the crown hiding all the technology in the address position the golfer is given a clean and pleasing look belying the fact that the VR_S Covert is the most innovative club Nike Golf has ever produced.

The High Speed Cavity Back is derived from technology previously seen in irons but has now been incorporated into drivers for the first time by Nike Golf allowing the VR_S Covert Tour to sustain more stability at impact to deliver more consistent energy to the ball which directly translates to distance and control. The cavity back is ‘covert’ as it can only be seen from the sole view allowing for the classic crown which hides how Nike engineers have moved the weight of the club to the heel and toe to increase MOI for an extremely forgiving driver that maximises distance on off-centre shots.

Rob Arlna, Nike Golf’s Global Golf Club Business Director told us, “the VR_S Covert is a game changing piece of technology. It is visually exciting, it feels and sounds amazing and, most importantly, it creates power results with a high degree of control”.

An intuitive, fully adjustable FlexLoft system incorporates 5 lofts and 3 face angles in each driver with a simple pull, turn and push/tighten mechanism and thanks to Nikes Dual Axis technology loft and face angle are independent of each other gibing golfers 15 different options to suit their game. Correct selection ensures that all players can optimise their ball flights for increased distance and enhanced manoeuvrability.

The VR_S Covert Tour also boasts Nike’s NexCor face technology that has been developed to ensure faster ball speed and longer distance from a wider area of the club face through a variable face thickness that has moved the sweet spot to an optimal position high in the centre of the face where research indicates most golfers are likely to make impact. The Tour version of the driver has a deeper face and a fixed weight screw not found in the larger 46cc regular model and comes with a choice of Mitsubishi Rayon’s new Kuro Kage shafts that are produced with higher carbon fibre density for superior control and power.

Nike VR_S Covert Tour Driver Review

The Nike VR_S Covert Tour driver is the smaller header brother of the VR_S Covert driver with a head that is 30cc smaller at 430cc. This is quite normal for a Tour driver and certainly if you like this style of driver then the Covert will be in your ball park.

Apart from the white Nike swoosh on the inside of the heel, the dark red looks of the Covert Tour driver look great at address and complement the black face well. The 2 white groove lines on the bottom of the face really help with alignment too.

The face is still a generous size and the NexCor design offers pretty good forgiveness for this class of driver. The Mutsubishi Rayon Kuro Kage shaft is a good quality stick for a premium driver and helps drive the performance of the club.

On the course the Covert Tour driver felt very solid but did not give as much feedback as we would expect from a Tour driver. Maybe it is the hype that Nike have whipped up about this club, but it was a little underwhelming, even though there is nothing to complain about the cavity idea itself.

The cavity is a different take on the weight distribution for drivers and Nike should be congratulated on stepping out with this design. It does remind us a little of the square driver idea of weight in the sides and back corners rather than the middle of the back, but that could just be us.

One of the main features of the Tour version of the Nike VR_S Covert driver is the FlexLoft adjustable hosel. This covers one of the biggest ranges of loft we have seen with 4 degrees in one degree increments from 8.5 to 12.5 degrees. In addition it is only the second consumer driver we have seen that offers a second adjustable ring which is there to change the face angle to left/neutral/right.

Whether this also changes lie would be useful to know as you do need to be able to adjust loft and lie independently to really make adjustability work. However the sole has a decent camber on it so the changes in loft and face angle should mean that the lie of the club can adjust to suit the player easily.

Having 1 degree gaps is good, but maybe some more fine tuning at 0.5 or 0.75 degrees would have been better for a tour driver as there can't be many elite players who would need to increase their loft to over 11 degrees.

I am sure Rory can get this baby to go as far and as straight as he wants, but for the rest of us the Nike VR_S Covert Tour driver maybe needs to deliver a bit more to justify the higher price.
