Nike VR Pro Combo Irons

4.4 stars out of 5 (Based on 5 reviews)

The Nike VR Pro Combo irons are a premium tour level iron offering a traditional look with a high degree of workability throughout the set. The VR Pro Combo irons change from a pocket cavity design (3, 4 iron), to split cavity (5, 6, 7 iron) to blades (8, 9, PW) throughout the set to give golfers the optimal club for each and every shot.

The pocket cavity design offers higher trajectory on longer shots whilst still looking like a blade, the split cavity enhances control and workability whilst the blades deliver an unsurpassed short-game feel. Nike have utilised new linear Centre of Gravity (CG) Mapping in the VR Pro Combo irons, moving the CG gradually and consistently throughout each club in the set for optimal launch and consistent distance control. The CG continues in a straight line throughout the VR Pro Combo set starting low in the pocket cavity design and elevating higher through the split cavity and blades.

The VR Pro Combo’s are forged from 1025 Forged Carbon Steel with each face die-stamped with grooves to exact specifications to ensure extremely low variance and shot-making consistency. The VR Pro Combo’s also feature Nike’s new X3X high frequency grooves which result in a cleaner, more consistent ball flight and spin through having more grooves closer together and deeper on the clubface while still conforming to the 2011 USGA and R&A groove rules. The VR Pro Combo’s come with Dynamic Gold steel shafts as standard.

Nike VR Pro Combo Irons Review

The Nike VR Pro Combo irons replace the VR Split Cavity set and seemed to have moved down the handicap levels. The longer irons from 2-5 iron come in a pocket cavity design that has a deeper centre of gravity for more forgiveness and a higher trajectory. The medium irons from 5 to 7 irons maintain the split cavity design to combine forgiveness, control and workability. The more astute amongst you will have spotted that you can get the 5 iron as a pocket or split cavity and that is where the flexibility this set offers. Finally the 8 to pitching wedge come as blade for greater feel.

Despite the difference in head styles, Nike have used Linear CG mapping to ensure that the centre of gravity moves consistently through the set. In our tests the Pro Combo irons felt every bit as good as before and the compact heads gave great feedback and were easy to shape shots with. The split cavity in the medium irons gave good forgiveness with sacrificing feel. However we weren’t convinced about the long irons as they seemed to sound and feel different to the rest of the set and not as blended in as before. The pocket cavity was just visible at address, which may not appeal to all, but on the plus side the forgiveness was pretty good for a better players iron.

For those who want to Combo their set even more, the Nike VR Pro Blade Irons that feature from 8 to wedge are also available as a separate set right up to a 3 iron. If you are a better player or are just feeling more adventurous then you could swap in as many of the VR Pro blades as you wish.

Huge fan of these irons. The blades (8-PW) look incredible and just ooze confidence at address. They fly high and offer plenty of playability. The higher irons, with the addition of cavity are easier to hit and produce a higher flight that I was expecting. I never considered getting a combo set before, but these irons have made me consider asking Santa for a special gift this year...

I was a big fan of this sets predecessor, the VR Forged Split Cavity, and with the VR Pro Combo Nike have raised the bar even higher. They are great looking irons, especially the blades at the higher end of the set, which offer the perfect combination of performance and feedback. Definitely worth a try.
