The Nike SQ Machspeed driver is the next evolution of the square drivers that Nike helped pioneer.

However it could be the last as they are the only model in the market now from the major manufacturers in this shape.

However which shape do we mean? The square is now a rounded-off trapezoid, because Nike say (and others agree) that the previous square shape was not aerodynamic enough and therefore the revised design of the Machspeed has been deisgned to fix this.

The channels on the back, side and sole of the head are there to channel the air as the club moves through the swing, but it looks as if the design team focussed entirely on aero-dynamics rather than the looks, which are 'unconventional' to say the least.

However despite that we are pleased to report that the Nike SQ Machspeed driver is better than it predecessor and the sound and feel at impact are very good.

The head design feel solid and is pretty forgiving, even if the flight of the ball is quite high. The SQ Machspeed comes with Nike's STR8-Fit system to adjust the angle of the head to shape the ball flight, which seems a bit odd on a square drive that is meant to hit it straighter.

However it may help those needing to straighten their flight up even more by setting a draw to counter a hook, or vice versa, so step forward if that is you.
