Mizuno MP CLK Utility Club

The Mizuno MP CLK hybrid golf club breathes fresh air into the crowded hybrid market by offering something just a little bit different, a better players hybrid that is forgiving without losing workability.

Many hybrids are seen by better players as far too prone to hooks but the compact MP CLK offers a compact clubhead, square face and low profile that more than earns it the description “tour ready.” The Mizuno MP CLK boast a sweet spot low down on the clubface which helps to reduce backspin and stop the ballooning flight that blights other hybrids. With the drop down crown and low profile promoting a low centre of gravity the MP CLK offers the golfer they should expect from a hybrid: forgiveness and versatility.

The Mizuno MP CLK hybrid also features Mizuno’s hugely successful Hot Metal technology in the shape of a Hot Metal 1770 stainless steel face that promotes extra ball speed for extra distance. In fact the MP CLK boasts of 1.2 mph better average ball speed and 4.2 yards longer carry than its predecessor the Mizuno CLK Fli-Hi hybrid.

What Golfalot Says

The Mizuno MP CLK hybrid was launched at the same time as the excellent MP-630 driver and MP Titanium fairway and we were hoping for another great club, but we have to say we were a little underwhelmed. The looks were the same old 'traditional' hybrid with a wide steel top line on a black head which does not do much for us, especially in the better players market. The sound and feel wasn't in the same league as the driver and fairway, probably because of the steel head, but even so it felt a bit dull and the 85g shaft was a little on the heavy side. Mizuno say the MP CLK Hybrid delivers more ball speed and this may be true as the flight was not bad and maybe a little higher than an MP FliHi iron. Both models are designed to match into any Mizuno iron set, however we feel better players should go for the irons or even the MX FliHi's, which may hit it a little higher but are much more fun.

The jury seems to have remained out on the looks of the Mizuno MP CLK hybrid but I must admit it doesn’t really concern me too much. It seems to be becoming Mizuno’s traditional look for hybrids and I don’t find it distracting at address although it is probably no helped by the unappealing white shaft. Despite all that I was a bit surprised that Mizuno haven’t got for a more refined look for their better players hybrid.

But I’m not a better player and I like to stick with what I know so I was generally quite comfortable with the appearance. I was also happy with the perfomance which produced a strong and consistent ball flight. This is a club that is designed for low handicappers so it understandably doesn’t have the same margin of error that I can rely on from other hybrids but it does its job when you strike the ball well and mishits are not total disasters.

Compared to the excellent MP Titanium fairway wood the MP CLK hybrid lack the top quality sound and feel that you often expect from a Mizuno club and that is disappointing, and I’d imagine it will leave a lot of low handicappers feeling this is an opportunity missed for Mizuno to produce a true players hybrid. This is a fine club and consistent club but it lacks the wow factor that Mizuno are so often capable of delivering.
