The 2009 King Cobra SZ Iron has been designed to deliver higher forgiveness and give every golfer improved accuracy and distance whilst still providing feel across the whole of the clubface. The Cobra SZ’s heel-toe weighting and the incorporation of a wide sole helps move CG to the back of the club and helps stop the club from digging into the turf while the CG is further improved by the clubs distinct low profile. The full cavity utilises both a back plate and urethane membrane which help to provide enhanced feel on every shot and provide a damping effect. The King Cobra SZ Iron also incorporates a larger offset which helps to promote a draw bias on every shot.

The new SZ iron range from Cobra have been designed to give players high launch and high forgiveness whilst maintaining accuracy, distance and feel across the whole face. Aimed at the mid-handicap player who is looking for a mix of playability and performance the SZ certainly looks like it is packed with forgiveness. The chunky top-line, wide sole and heel and toe weighting to increase playability are all present however at address you are struck that the size of the club head is more of what you would expect from a better players iron. We found this contradiction evident when we tested the SZ irons with the clubs delivering the high trajectory and solid feel that we would expect from the clubs combined with impressive distance and accuracy; however due to the smaller size of the club head they were not as forgiving on off centre hits as you would expect from a game improvement iron but the trade off was that we found them fairly easy to manoeuvre for a club in this category. Cobra say this is aimed at the 8 to 14 handicap range and they are probably right. However there is a lot of competition in this area from better player irons with more forgiveness on one hand and forgiving irons with more performance on the other and in our view we feel that the SZ iron is neither one thing or the other and you should maybe look at one of the other Cobra models instead.
