The Cobra AMP Cell Irons are packed with Cobra's latest technology and looks, and designed to provide explosive distance and pinpoint accuracy.

“Our AMP CELL Irons take the best technologies from our research in irons and combine them with metalwood-type construction,” said Cobra Puma's Tom Preece.

The longer irons (4-7) combine a metalwood construction with a high strength, thin steel face. That face is welded to a softer 431 steel body optimising the irons' COR zone, creating more controlled weighting and a lighter face. Together, these features generate faster balls speeds for improved forgiveness and distance.

The internal weighting within the Cobra AMP Cell irons moves the weight away from the body and face to create perimeter weighting. This positions the centre of gravity behind the Sweet Zone and produces a high MOI for even greater forgiveness.

A new V-Skid sole design has a higher bounce leading edge with toe heel relief. This enables a vibration management system to reduce unwanted vibrations, making the AMP Cell irons versatile for better players, yet forgiving for mid to higher handicap players.

Finally, the AMP Cell irons maintain Cobra's E9 Face Technology. A progressive cavity and face design improves the distance, feel and forgiveness of each individual iron based on golfer most common impact patterns.

Cobra AMP Cell Irons Review

The Cobra AMP Cell iron replaces the Cobra AMP iron design which we liked so much last time. Compared the previous model, the head shape and style of the AMP Cell are broadly similar with a few styling tweaks here and there. The excellent V-Skid sole has been made a little wider and slips through the turf very easily from a variety of lies. The top line is also a little wider and maybe moves these irons up the handicap range a little.

However the big changes are under the hood as Cobra have shifted a lot of weight around to make the AMP Cell irons even more forgiving. Weight has been moved from the top of the iron and placed lower down on the face to add more power. The cell structure inside the head mirrors the pattern on the back and enables a strong structure with the gaps in the 'grid' filled in with weight nearer the toe in the long irons. This gives them a very solid feel indeed and they were a joy to hit. The distance was very good too as the 3-5 irons are slightly longer in the shaft with the 4-iron being around half an inch longer than the AMP 4-iron.

Technology from woods comes to the AMP Cell irons as Cobra have used a 10% thinner hyper-strength steel face and plasma welded it to a softer stainless steel frame and combined it with a speed channel in the bottom of the sole that you can't see. This allows the face to flex more and give more ball speed and the feel from this is very good indeed.

The shorter irons feature a more standard 100% cast face design and do feel very solid and some felt that the AMP Cell wedge was a little longer than the previous AMP version. Despite the chunkier looks they were still very playable. The feel is improved by a new aluminium and thermoplastic rubber (TPR) insert medallion that comes in a choice of 4 colours to match your style, which is a nice touch.

Overall the Cobra AMP Cell irons are a worthy successor to the AMP model and continue all the looks, power, forgiveness and playability right through the set with the long irons in particular being a joy to hit.
