3.5 stars out of 5 (Based on 2 reviews)

The Cleveland CG Black Driver is designed for players that have lost yardage and swing speed, and are looking to get their distance back.

At 265g, the Cleveland CG Black Driver is the lightest driver on the market. The reduced weight helps players generate more swing speed and distance with the same swing effort. The innovative, teardrop-inspired, Speed Crown Design reduces drag at all angles to further maximise distance. Cleveland's MaxCOR2 Variable Face Thickness Technology, that increases the trampoline effect on off-center hits, increases ball speeds off the face and makes the CG Black Driver more forgiving.

Another new feature on the Cleveland CG Black Driver is a weight screw located in the rear of the sole plate. This high-density screw positions the center of gravity deeper and lower to promote a high, draw-biased ball flight.

The Cleveland CG Black Driver is paired with a Miyazaki C. Kua shaft and Golf Pride Tour grip. The shaft weighs 39g and the grip weighs just 25g, which is about half as much as a standard grip. The combination further decreases the club's overweight to produce the fastest swing speed possible.

Cleveland CG Black Driver Review

The 46 inch shaft on the Cleveland CG Black Driver is a quarter of an inch shorter than the XL 270 driver and it is very light and manageable. You would expect a shaft this long and light to be too whippy but the excellent Miyazaki construction gives it a nice firm feel and rigidity to perform as well as any more traditionally weighted shafts on the market.

The CG Black driver has a taller crown that slopes down more steeply down the Speed Crown Design to the back of the head that is also longer front to back than the XL270. At address it does look bigger and more similar to the SL290 and the dark colour scheme looks very classy.

The rear weight screw certainly helps the ball get airborne with a slight right to left flight so if you have a slower swing speed or hit your driver too low then the CG Black driver could be ideal for you. For those with more standard swings, then the Tour version with lower lofts and slightly heavier shaft options would be better.

The only negative was the sound from the larger head which was a little piercing on occasion, but if you like making an audible statement on the course then this driver is for you.

This season I switched to the Cleveland CG black driver, which was the first modern generation ‘oversized headed’ drivers I have owned.

The first thing that I noticed was the additional distance and better ball flight I was gaining (consistently around 20 more yards). Also the look and feel of the club is fantastic.

I do find that compared to previous drivers I have struggled slightly with consistency. When I had a bad swing with my old driver, I could usually feel where the mistakes were (usually pushing the ball right), and subsequently try and correct the problem throughout the round. The CG Black is extremely light and incredibly easy to swing, but I do find that on any given swing I could be pulling the ball left or pushing it right, because of the clubs light weight I find it hard to gauge where I am going wrong in my swing. Saying that when you connect with this club the results are fantastic.

Overall I am very happy with this club, but I do think my swing speed may be better suited to club with more weight in the head. For players looking for a great feeling club and purely more distance I would highly recommend it.
