Building on it's successful 588 name, Cleveland have launched their 588 RTX (or Rotex) wedge. Benefitting from a new Rotex pattern on the face, and with newly designed grooves, the 588 RTX CB (Cavity Back) wedge brings the new face of spin and cavity back forgiveness to the famous look of the Cleveland 588 wedge.
The Rotex pattern sees Cleveland mill a new pattern of roughness of the face of the 588 RTX CB wedges. The roughness on the face and between the grooves allows players to impact maximum spin, especially on open-face shots where impact tends to be closer to the toe.
The groove design was developed closely with Cleveland's Tour players, and has produced Tour Zip U-Grooves that are 16% bigger and more precise that the standard 588 wedge. By maximising the groove size and creating a rougher, more durable face, the Cleveland 588 RTX CB wedge produces greater friction and spin for critical scoring shots, whether from the fairway, rough, sand or wet conditions.
The undercut cavity back design helps produce more weighting in the perimeter of the wedge, offering more forgiveness for off-centre strikes. The 588 RTX CB wedge is further benefitted by a wide, consistant-width sole design with toe and heel grinds. Inspired by Cleveland's CG14 and CG16 wedges, the sole is designed to improve shots from bunkers and deep rough.
The 588 RTX CB is available in both a satin chrome and black pearl finish, with lofts increasing in two degree increments from 46 degrees to 60 degrees in both right and left handed options.

If you think the Cleveland 588 RTX CB wedges look similar to the previous CG16 wedges then you would be right. The shape of the head and the cavity back design are a continuation of the CG16 style. The main differences are the small medallion in the back of the 588 RTX head and the stablising bars in the back of the face.
The aim of these is to increase the forgiveness and stabilty of the clubhead. Whilst you do not really assoicate or need a lot of forgiveness with wedges, they do their job well and the wedge has a nice solid feel right across the face and the impact sound is lovely.
The other main difference is the extra scoriing on the face of the wedge that is there to improve spin. Cleveland were the first to do this on the CG15 and many others have followed suit since. The circular pattern behind the score lines between the grooves provides a bit of extra roughness that you can feel as you move your finger down the face and it works well on the course and out of sand.
The CG16 design was popular on Tour for its performance out of bunkers and the Cleveland 588 RTX CB wedges continue this fine performance with the slightly wider sole complimented by a subtle heel and toe grind. At present there is only the mid bounce option with the 2 dots on the sole, which is a little disappointing. The CG16 had low bounce versions of the higher lofts and hopefully that will come in due course for the 588 Rotex.
Both the satin chrome and black satin finishes look clean and classy, although the black satin finish will wear quite quickly to show the silver steel underneath if you like that sort of thing.
Overall this is a very good wedge that better players right up to 20 handicappers should try as it combines performance and value for money with a little more forgiveness than the 588 forged wedge.
