All golf companies are looking for the hot new innovation or technology to help players hit further, straight and play better golf. Well, the folks at Callaway believe they've found the hot new range of clubs, the Callaway X Hot, and X Hot Pro, irons and woods.

The X Hot irons will take over from the RAZR family of irons, designed to provide distance gains for amateurs and professionals. The key change in the X Hot iron lies underneath the surface, Callaway's Deep Undercut Cavity Design, and powerful Speed Frame Face.

The cavity back design has allowed Callaway's award winning R&D team to place the weight in the X Hot irons to precisely position the centre of gravity, and move the most compliant part of the face, i.e. the sweet spot, lower. Callaway's research found that more and more golfers are striking their irons shot lower on the face, and designed the X Hot iron to produce faster ball speeds from this area.

You may have heard of the Speed Frame Face Technology. Callaway have incorporated the technology, previously used in their drivers, to make the face of the X Hot irons stiffer, creating a more efficient energy transfer to the ball. The stiffer, faster face design means more distance and speed, even on off-centre strikes.

The medallion located on the back of the club has also been modified. The dual material design features Callaway's Feel Management Technology, designed to fine tune the sound of the shot, promoting a crisper, dynamic feel at higher speeds.

We caught up with Callaway's Senior Vice President of R&D, Alan Hocknell to get his thoughts on the X Hot irons:

"The X Hot Irons have been meticulously engineered – both in terms of physical characteristics and club configuration – to increase ball speed and promote overall distance optimisation. In doing so I think we have raised the bar and created the standard in distance for the irons category. Golfers will very much enjoy the results"

To help further enjoy the Callaway X Hot irons, the company paired them with the True Temper Speed Step 85 lightweight shaft.

Callaway X Hot Irons Review

The Callaway X Hot irons are all about more distance. The styling is reminiscent of the Razr X and all the previous generations of Callaway's most forgiving irons, so there are no surprises there.

Callaway has kept the proven features from these models in the thru-bore hosel and the Razr weighting on the back of the trailing edge to lower the centre of gravity. This is raised up so that the wide sole is kept to a good size and goes through the turf well, especially from the rough and semi-rough.

The main change is the speed frame design that Callaway say will increase ball speed by about 3mph resulting in a distance gain of around 7 yards. This is all well and good but it is the gapping between irons and to the woods and wedges you should pay attention too. Nevertheless, the fact you can take an 8 iron instead of 7 should help your accuracy.

When we tested the Callaway X Hot irons, the faces did feel a bit hotter and the feel was still very good. They were also very forgiving and the generous offset hosel will help here. The flight was a little higher than the X Hot Pro irons, , but that is to be expected and will help those high handicappers get the ball up in the air.

The X Hot lofts are similar to the Razr X with the wedge at 44 degrees so you will probably need the A Wedge at 49 degrees too. From 6 to 3 iron the shaft length goes up in increments of 0.75 inches instead of 0.5 inches so the 5-iron is 0.5 inches longer than the current model which will also increase the distance from the club as you will have more momentum in the clubhead.

The shaft is also a revised option with a lightweight 95 gram Project X steel shaft in stiff and regular instead of the uniflex shafts Callaway have used in the past. This is a good upgrade and the Universal gripe is a nice mid-size and has a very good tread pattern for lining up and grip.

Overall the Callaway X Hot are an evolution to the previous model rather than a revolution. The extra oomph from the new face is noticeable and combined with the new shaft options, the Callaway X Hot irons are still one of the best models in the market for game improvers with a little extra to spend.
