Callaway X Forged Irons

5 stars out of 5 (Based on 1 reviews)

The 2013 Callaway X Forged irons replace the RAZR X Forged irons, and 2009 X-Forged before them. They are tour-inspired irons for better players, and feature a new design for the 2013 season.

With plenty of feedback from their Tour pros, Callaway's research and design team set to create an improved forged iron. Feedback showed that Callaway's players were preferring to use muscleback irons (RAZR X Muscleback for example), commenting that they had a cleaner look than the forged options. The 2013 Callaway X Forged iron now has a cleaner look, new face design, shorter blade length and better performance.

The blade length sees the X Forged iron fit somewhere between the previous RAZR X Forged, yet not as short as the muscleback irons. The shorter blade length is combined with a wider muscleback-type sole design that is added to prevent the club digging at impact, an issue raised again by Callaway's Tour players.

The new X Forged irons have been designed to offer the same forged feel that better players love, but also add distance. In addition to being one degree stronger throughout the set (than previous RAZR X Forged), the 2013 X Forged irons features CG (centre of gravity) height progression. The CG is lower in the long irons making them launch higher and further, whilst the short irons benefit from a higher CG that creates a flatter, more penetrating ball flight.

The Callaway X Forged iron has been paired with Project X's lightweight PXi steel shaft.

Callaway X Forged Irons Review

The Callaway X Forged irons continue the excellent blade/cavity forged hybrids that Callaway have been making for a while now.

Compare to the 2009 X-Forged irons the heads do feel a little shorter heel to toe but you soon forget this as the forgiveness is just as good. The triple net forging gives excellent feel that is soft and still provides a penetrating flight thanks to the same centre of gravity progression through the set.

As these irons are forged it enables Callaway to more accurately create the grooves than with a cast iron and they have a sharper 20 degree close space groove for more grip. Like the other irons Callaway have gone for lots of shallow grooves and it does change the visual look of the face compared to other irons in the market.

The shaft is also very good and complements the X Forged irons well giving them a nice feel and balance.

As you might expect from this size of head the 3 and 4 irons are a little hard work but the mid and short irons are just lovely and will give you all the performance that a low handicapper will want. The Callaway X Forged are a big improvement on the previous RAZR X Forged as they offer a bit more feel and better forgiveness. Try them out.
