Lets start with a bold statement. The Callaway Steelhead X-14s are very good. They have an excellent launch angle, nice feel off the face and sit well behind the ball - the trouble is they aren't the best. I brought these clubs as a replacement for the blades that I had used for years. At the time I brought them I was only playing golf once a week and only during the summer. Since taking the game up seriously again (after a 15 year+ layoff !!) I have started to play more and thats when I found the problems with these irons. It is nearly impossible to shape the ball with these clubs, I'm not a pro but I know how and when to put side spin on a golf ball, these irons DON'T let me do that. They hit the ball very high and very straight, which is great, don't get me wrong, they are just a bit too 'dumb'. I get the occasional 'hot' shot as well, making distance control a bit of a bind, they have quite an inconsistent face on them and because of the high launch weighting (and low kick shaft) thye have taken a load of loft off the clubs which means you're a club lower everywhere than I am used too. These are great clubs for a mid handicappers or a high handicapper wanting to improve, but for the single figure player I'd recommend a good set of blades. Watch out on ebay over the next few months, I have my heart set on some Mizuno MP32 so the Callaway X14s will be going !!
