Callaway have launched their second generation RAZR Fit driver, the RAZR Fit Xtreme Driver. Billed as the longest fully adjustable driver the company has ever tested, the RAZR Fit Xtreme features several new technologies to improve it's performance over the the original RAZR Fit as well as more personalisation options.

The face of the driver features a new Speed Frame Face that optimises stiffness and stress distribution across the face. Essentially this will make the face more efficient at transfer the energy from club into longer distances, even on off-centre hits.

Forged Composite is not new to Callaway, in fact, they have been using it for more than four years. However Callaway say the latest Forged Composite Crown, weighing just 12.1 grams, is the lightest crown in golf. By removing weight on the crown, the R&D team were able to lower the centre of gravity (CG) on the club to further promote higher ball speeds and less spin. In fact, Callaway claim that the RAZR Fit Xtreme features the lowest CG of any adjustable driver on the market to date.

The RAZR Fit Xtreme is offered in more lofts, that incorporate an even greater range of face angle/CG options than the original RAZR Fit driver. Using Callaway's OptiFit Technology, the RAZR Fit Xtreme can be set to Open, Square or Closed at address, whilst moving the 13 and 1 gram OptiFit weights shift the club's CG promoting a noticeable draw or neutral ball flight. Callaway have optimised each clubhead, based on loft, for the performance of each player that will use it. For example, the 8.5 degree model features a 440cc clubhead with a more open face angle, while the 460cc 13.5 degree model has a more closed face.

For players looking for personalisation, the RAZR Fit Xtreme can customised using Callaway's udesign process. Both the sole and crown can be separately customised with eight different, bold colours. Additionally, for the first time, players will be able to use custom laser engraving to personalise the sole of the RAZR Fit Xtreme.

Alan Hocknell from Callaway's R&D team said “The RAZR Fit Xtreme Driver is worthy of its extreme designation. We worked tirelessly to improve on the best distance characteristics of our longest drivers, and the result is incredibly fast ball speed off the Speed Frame Face, plus the lowest CG of any adjustable driver in golf. This driver is very long and consistent. It will not be matched.”

The RAZR Fit Xtreme will be offered with either a Aldila Trinity or Matrix 7M3 Black Tie shaft.

Callaway RAZR Fit Xtreme Driver Review

Callaway claim the RAZR Fit Xtreme Driver will be the longest adjustable driver in the market when it launches. Compared to the previous model the lighter crown combines with the new speed frame face to lower the centre of gravity by 30%. The reduces the amount of backspin by around 300 rpm or more, resulting in distance gains of 6-12 yards, or a club or two less into the green. All good stuff.

There is also a new Adilia Trinity shaft that and combines the benefits of previous shafts like the consitent flex (Multilayer), core structure (S-Core) and tip flex (RIP). We found it felt very good indeed. It is a little heavier at 63-69 grams (depending on flex) and is not the widest looking or feeling shaft. However it is very stable and provides a solid engine for the forged composite head.

The RAZR Fit Xtreme head features 1 and 13 gram weights that are in a new location to improve the adjustability options. The hosel still only has 2 settings away from neutral which is a bit limiting. The open and closed settings can be enhanced with the weights and are a good fine tuning option if you need it.

The head size of the RAZR Fit Xtreme is 440cc in the lower lofts and 460cc in the higher lofts of 11 and 13.5 degrees. Apparently better (Tour) players like the smaller heads for looks and also for the ability to move the ball, but we fall into the better player (non-Tour) categogry and a 460cc 9.5 degree head would do us nicely, thank you very much.

Other than this minor oversite on Callaway's part, the RAZR Fit Xtreme driver sounds and feel very good at impact. The sound is more solid and slightly duller, as you would expect from a small headed composite driver. Distance-wise it was right up there with other drivers so the fine tuning and fitting service of a Callaway fitter will help you get the most from this driver.

There is also the option to use the optional udesign service to change the colour of the sole plate, crown and grip of your RAZR Fit Xtreme driver, as well as adding some other personalisation. This is a good fun option if you can afford it on top of the premium pricing to make your RAZR Fit Xtreme stand out even more.
