Callaway introduce the Big Bertha Heavenwood® Hybrids, a new line of hybrid clubs combining the accuracy and control of a long iron with the distance of a fairway wood. The exciting new Heavenwood Hybrids are aimed at the millions of golfers who struggle to hit long irons. While higher-lofted fairway woods can be a strong alternative to long irons, certain average golfers have difficulty with the length of the clubs and more-accomplished players prefer a more compact head design. The shape and size of the new Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids addresses both these concerns while providing the added distance of fairway woods and the accuracy and workability of irons. Available in five lofts corresponding to the 1-iron through 5-iron, the Heavenwood Hybrids feature a low profile that creates an extremely low centre of gravity and patented Callaway Golf® technologies that deliver design and performance advantages to Heavenwood Hybrids that no other club manufacturer can match. 'Our new Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids represent the best of everything you expect from the Big Bertha name and live up to our brand promise of Demonstrably Superior and Pleasingly Different® products,' said Patrice Hutin, President and Chief Operating Officer of Callaway Golf. 'They are an entirely new category of club that gives you the distance and control to take on the most difficult long shots, with the confidence and skill to get you there in two.' Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids feature an elongated, low profile head design that dramatically lowers the centre of gravity for ease in getting the ball airborne. This also promotes clean contact with the ball in various turf conditions ranging from tight lies to deep rough. The extended heel-to-toe head shape features maximized perimeter weighting, which raises the moment of inertia (MOI) for increased stability and more resistance to twisting on off-centre shots. The modified War Bird® sole design promotes solid contact from any lie, and helps the head glide over or through any surface with minimal resistance. Even the lengths of the Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids have been optimized: They're longer than corresponding irons, yet shorter than comparable fairway woods. The result is greater distance than comparable long irons, with maximum playability, control and accuracy. The new Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids incorporate proven, core Callaway Golf technologies: The S2H2® (Short, Straight, Hollow Hosel) design repositions weight traditionally found in the hosel area, moving it to the perimeter of the clubhead for a higher MOI, which means more resistance to twisting. Tru-Bore® Technology delivers improved feel and clubhead control by extending the shaft from the hosel and through the sole of the clubhead. VFT® (Variable Face Thickness) Technology increases clubface efficiency for maximum distance on shots hit from all areas of the clubface. Women's right-handed versions are available in 4H and 5H in Champagne and Shiraz colours that complement the women's line of Big Bertha Drivers, Fairway Woods and Irons.

The Callaway Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids are very easy to hit and a great alternative to long irons. With the new War Bird sole they are very easy to play from the tee, semi-rough or the fairway. They are mainly aimed at the m-d-higher handicapper as the higher lofter versions hit it higher then their equivalent irons. Lower handicappers may appreciate the lower lofted versions as they are easier to hit than a 1 or 2 iron and they are great all round clubs, giving more hitting options than a fairway wood. We tried a 14 degree version against a 15 degree Callaway Big Bertha Steel Fairway Wood and it produced a lower trajectory than the fairway wood, but not as low as the comparable iron from the X-18 Pro Series Irons. However the shafts are shorter on the Heavenwoods than on the Fairway woods so they will not hit it as far. Looks wise, the design is clean and sharp, but from above the head looks longer and shallower than a fairway wood, which may not be everyone's cup of tea and we are not over-keen on the hosel design. Overall if you are looking for a utility/rescue club then this is definitely one to consider.
