Callaway Big Bertha Fusion FT-3 Driver

The Callaway Big Bertha Fusion FT-3 Driver is a 460-cc multi-material breakthrough driver designed to deliver the ultimate in high performance. The FT-3 Driver combines Callaway Golf's patented internal weight-shifting technology with a precision-tuned face to deliver the new science of distance with accuracy ' explosiveness and forgiveness unlike anything you have experienced in a driver. Fusion Technology is all about the marriage of two distinctly different materials in the clubhead: an ultra-hot titanium cup face and a superlight carbon composite body. The body of the clubhead is so light, it frees up 44 grams of discretionary weight ' nearly a quarter of the weight of the entire clubhead ' which is distributed inside various parts of the head to benefit golfers' unique swing types and ball flights. The titanium cup face, with patented Variable Face Thickness (VFT) Technology, has a much larger effective hitting area for greater distance on off-centre shots. And because it is tuned to comply with maximum USGA limits on Characteristic Time, the face of the FT-3 Driver generates greater ball speed for increased distance. All the discretionary weight in the FT-3 ' far more than any competitor's driver ' gave Callaway Golf club engineers the latitude to precisely position it to maximize stability and generate corrective-spin characteristics. This is as important to amateurs of all levels as it is to top-tier pros. And now with Callaway Golf's OptiFit Fitting System developed in conjunction with the FT-3 Driver, golfers can customize their driver simply by choosing the setup that best fits their individual swing type. No fiddling with wrenches, screws or gadgets. They can choose from three Centre of Gravity (CG) choices: Neutral for maximum workability; Draw for reducing a slice or fade and promoting a draw; or Fade for reducing a hook and promoting a fade or straight ball. The FT-3 Drivers' 460cc clubhead is the largest allowable head volume under the Rules of Golf. It serves to increase Moment of Inertia (MOI) for extreme forgiveness on off-centre hits and exceptionally consistent ball speed up, down and across the face.

What Golfalot Says

The Callaway Big Bertha Fusion FT-3 driver is an improvement on the composite Fusion driver, but only it's mother would love it's looks! It certainly does the job and the face is more forgiving due the weight from the crown being moved back and lower in the club head. At impact it sounds a bit dull, but it is very forgiving and produces a strong trajectory that is easy to shape in all directions. It's a very good club, but for us there are better composite drivers around. Sorry Callaway.

Grateful to others who posted reviews whilst making my choice - so thought would return favour. 7 handicapper - was using Titliest 983K 9.5 - low flight, hit fairways, 260yds was exception - tried new Titliest 905? - likes high flight but same length - tried TaylorMade R7, but nothing exceptional, and weights a gimmick - led to Callaway Big Bertha Fusion FT-3 driver. 10 degrees with regular NVS shaft - sits beautifully - fearful head was gonna be big & cumbersome, but the size is concealed - deep face that you don't notice at adress - not too wide a face, which made the TaylorMade 300 series ugly - but the 460cc secret comes from a deep head front to back, which looks fine at address and not aerodynamically unweildy. Same swingweight as Callaways Great Big Bertha steel fairway woods (D2), so felt familiar. Sound is different, more of a thunk than a tink and is quite satisfactory. Flight is the 'rainbow' I have not got close to with my 983K, lovely and high (use Pro V1) yet great carry and then some roll. Length is amazing for someone of my venerable years (50), hit two drives with slight wind behind some 280 yards, enabling me to hit a hard par-4 and par-5 in 2 for first time in way too long. Even into the breeze the carry was glorious. But in many ways for me at least, the best part is not the length, but the line of flight - my bad shot is a leaky fade, right when I go for a big one - the Callaway Big Bertha Fusion driver will start it on the line to the right, but it stays straight & doesn't drift off into trouble. You have no idea how much of a relief it is! If there is a bad side to the Fusion FT-3 it is simply that you stand over the ball thinking you can hit the ball forever, and want to try & do so, which isn't always clever, but I am ashamed to say I am enjoying stepping up to the tee more than I have done in years - buy & enjoy is what I would recommend.
