The Callaway X-Forged UT irons are the cavity back long iron versions of the Callaway X-Forged irons.

Callaway X-Forged UT Iron

I say they are cavity back, but they are really a hollow headed iron with a tungsten infused insert inside in order to position the CG correctly and increase the MOI to make them more forgiving.

Callaway X-Forged UT Iron

They are designed to be more forgiving than the standard X-Forged 2018 irons, so the heads are longer at address, but not by much so I would say they are more mid-sized in the big scheme of things.

Callaway X-Forged UT Iron

Certainly the thicker top line gives it a much more friendly look, but I would not say it is as forgiving as one of the long irons from the Callaway Rogue irons range.

The feel is good without being great as the forged feel is tamed by the hollow head in the trade-off for that forgiveness. It still sounds solid though and in the right circumstances can give a little zing sound.

The flight was mid to low but that could be due to the stock Project X stepless steel shaft that emphasises its better player credentials.

Callaway X-Forged UT Iron

This is certainly a better players long iron for those who want more forgiveness than the standard X-Forged irons but don't want to use a cavity back iron or a hybrid. You do get quite a wide sole with low bounce so even from firm lies the performance is very good.

Callaway X-Forged UT Iron

In the UK it is available in long iron lofts of 18°, 21° and 24°, but in the USA you can also get 27° and 30° versions too, which seems a bit odd as I can't see better players using them and golfers who want more forgiveness than X-Forged should probably go for the Rogue irons.

Callaway X-Forged UT Iron

There are a few hot, hollow headed irons for better players now in the market, but the X-Forged UT is not one of these as the ball speed and hence distance was down on these competitors, so I would regard it as more of a players iron for those who want control more than distance.

If you are a low handicapper and want a long iron with forgiveness and speed then I would look at the Rogue or the bionic Rogue X long irons as they will both give you a higher flight to help it stop more quickly on the green.

However if you are a Callaway loyalist and have the ball speed to launch the X-Forged UT or just want a driving iron that goes under the wind and runs out, then there is no reason not to give it a go.
