If you've thought about buying new irons over the past few years, the chances are you'll have come across TaylorMade's P790 at some point. One of the best-selling models in the company's iron history, the P790 was one of the first on the market to blend forgiveness and distance improvements with sleek, better-player looks and golfers loved them.

TaylorMade P790 2021 Irons

2021 sees the introduction of the third generation of P790, and features redeveloped technologies inside the head to give all new levels of power and performance.

The main innovation in this year's model is the SpeedFoam Air, an ultralight urethane foam which sits inside the forged hollow body head.

69% less dense than the prior generation, the addition of SpeedFoam Air saves around 3.5g of weight per iron to allow for a redistribution of mass, lowering the CG placement and promoting easier launch.

The P790 heads are crafted from 8620 carbon steel which provides strength and durability, whilst making the head up to 37.5% thinner in certain locations for lower CG placement.

This thin-wall design pairs with the thinnest face in P790 history, at just 1.5mm, which promotes excellent flexibility, fast ball speeds and distance along with a soft forged feel.

A new 'Intelligent Sweet Spot' has been designed after the company's iron development team looked at data from thousands of different golf shots to determine the most common impact points on the face.

The sweet spot was then strategically placed in order to capture more of these shots, increasing it's size by as much as 60% compared to the original P790. This results in increased ball speed and distance where the golfers need it most.

Up to 31g of tungsten weighting towards the toe of each iron head improves stability and forgiveness, whilst TaylorMade's Thru-Slot Speed Pocket is again there to provide more face flex at impact so that you can get the most from your mishits.

"SpeedFoam Air is the heartbeat of the new P790 irons. The development of this lightweight urethane material allowed us to strategically reconstruct the iron head to promote optimal launch conditions and a sweet spot that covers the most common strike points on the face."

P790 UDI

Complementing the irons is the new P790 UDI, a forged driving iron with Tour-inspired shaping that includes TaylorMade's proven technologies including Thru-Slot Speed Pocket and Forged Hollow Body Construction with a thin-walled design.

The UDI has already been used on Tour by the likes of Dustin Johnson and is bound to be a popular alternative to hybrids or fairway woods for many of the game's best players in the coming months.

Like the irons, the P790 UDI is powered by the new SpeedFoam Air and constructed with a soft, 8620 carbon steel body along with a high strength, forged 4140 carbon steel face.

The head design is meant to promote low spin shots with a piercing trajectory, and TaylorMade says it is 'built for golfers who want control without sacrificing distance'.

Available from 3rd September, the P790 irons are priced at an RRP of £1,149 in steel and £1,349 in graphite. They are offered in 3-PW with an optional AW, equipped with True Temper Dynamic Gold or Mitsubishi MMT graphite shafts with Golf Pride Z-Grips.

The P790 UDI is available as a 17° 2-iron and is priced at £229. It comes with a Project X HZRDS Black Smoke shaft and Golf Pride Z-Grip.
