When you think of Cleveland 588 you'd be forgiven for picturing the company's successful wedges. However, the 588 number now extends to the longest club in the bag with the release of the Cleveland 588 Altitude driver.

The 588 number relates to the 5th generation wedge that was released in '88. The company has expanded the 588 brand to irons with a number of sets (MT, TT, Altitude as well as Forged CB and MBs), and now for 2014, the 588 name will be featured on a Cleveland driver for the first time.

The 588 driver will not be available in the UK, and don't expect to see it in the hands of Keegan Bradley or Graeme McDowell. It is not designed for Tour players. Instead, the 588 Altitude is aimed at game-improvement golfers with moderate swing speeds.

Featuring Cleveland's Precision Weighting and Ultralite Technology, it is designed to send the ball higher, further and straighter. Along with a premium Matrix shaft, the 588 driver promotes more distance and forgiveness with the same swing effort.

Cleveland 588 Altitude Driver

Cleveland have always placed a heavy emphasis on lightweight performance. The 588 Altitude driver has a total club weight of just 270 grams. Cleveland's Ultralite Technology combines a lightweight head design, grip and shaft to produce a driver that will produce more club head speed and distance with the same swing effort.

The Precision Weighting in the driver refers to Cleveland's ability to create a thin, high-strength, wall construction. By keeping it strong yet light, the R&D were able to place more weight in the back and lower portions of the head. This redistribution of weight promotes a higher launching driver with more stability and an increased MOI, that limits twisting on off-centre strikes.

Cleveland tell us the 588 Altitude features the largest sweet spot possible due to its enhanced, variable face thickness. The trampoline effect is enhanced in the toe, centre and heel of the face.

Whilst the driver is offered with a premium Matrix Radix shaft, designed for a mid-to-high launch, more than 20 custom shafts are available. With weight and flex options, golfers can have the benefit of more than 80 shafts from top shaft brands such as Miyazaki, Aldila, Mitsubishi, Grafalloy, Fujikura, Graphite Design and UST.

Fear not ladies, a women's version of the driver is available as a custom offering.
