Callaway has announced a new version of its successful performance forged irons, the Apex Black.

Callaway Apex Black Irons

Eagle-eyed observers will spot the similarity with the excellent Apex CF 16 irons we reviewed, so those preferring a darker appearance in their irons can now benefit from Callaway's performance technology.

The Satin Black finish on the clubhead gives the irons a distinctive blacked out look and premium shaft options, that include a stepless True Temper XP 95 steel shaft with a satin black finish, mean these irons will truly stand out from the crowd.

For the Apex Black Callaway is offering a large custom shaft list at no upcharge allowing players buying this unique club to fully customise the irons to their game.

Of course looks are only important if the technology in the irons, and your scores, lives up to the hype and the Apex Black combine advanced technologies to produce a forged iron for all golfers, including European Tour player Alex Noren who told us why he has the Apex CF 16 irons in his bag.

Callaway Apex CF 16 Review

Utilising 360 Face Cup technology the irons are constructed in two parts, with a forged body that includes the hosel, laser welded to the forged cup face. This generates more speed and thanks to a four part forging process and precision milling in the 4-7 irons the 1025 carbon steel head maintains ball speed on strikes across the whole face for greater distance.

The shorter irons from 8-AW have a face plate specifically engineered to boost the feel and increase control to give the increased precision better players require from these clubs.

The progressive offset, sole widths, CG height and notch weighting provide the right balance of ball flight, playability, forgiveness and control for each iron. The longer irons feature increased offset where you need it for more forgiveness, while the shorter irons have a more compact shape with less offset for feel and control.

Soft feel comes from a mild carbon steel that has undergone a quadruple net forging process followed by precision milling before the application of the Satin Black finish.
