Tiger Wins First Event Wearing His New Nike TW '14 Shoes

I was lucky enough to be walking around TPC Sawgrass watching Tiger not only walk off with his 78th PGA Tour win, but stroll to victory in his new TW '14 shoes. The new shoes not only kept his feet dry, but kept his ball dry as he navigated the famed 17th hole (unlike Sergio) and won the 2013 PLAYERS Championship by two strokes.

Alas, I woke up Monday morning to emails, photos and information on the new shoe as our friends at Nike seized the moment capitalising on Tiger's success and introducing the world to the Nike TW '14 golf shoe.

The second generation TW shoe follows on from the original Nike TW '13 shoe and continues to showcase Nike's Free concept. First featured in Nike's running shoes, the Free concept is centered around using the natural movement of athlete's feet.

The Nike TW '14 has some interesting upgrades for the 2013 season. Tobie Hatfield, Nike's Athlete Projects Innovator says “With this shoe, we worked diligently to take every detail to a new level.”

The goal was to improve the stability and traction. To improve the stability, designers used a familiar technology, Nike's FlyWire technology.

Recently featured in the Lunar Control shoe, FlyWire is made of an ultra-strong, yet ultra-lightweight construction of high-tensile fibres that provide a dynamic and supportive fit in the midfoot. It has the unique ability to reduce weight and increase stability in a design that doesn’t stretch over time.

“Tiger’s relentless focus on getting better makes us better," added Hatfield. "His insights force us to never stop innovating and delivering technology that will enhance a golfer’s performance. In the TW ’14, he wanted more stability with mobility and we've accomplished that by using Nike's Dynamic Flywire technology which moves with him, but stabilizes his foot when he swings. We also increased breathability of the shoe by using a full mesh tongue."

As well as the black version worn by Tiger on Sunday at TPC Sawgrass, look out for a standard white-coloured model. Additionally, in a first for Nike Golf, golfers will be able to use the NikeID store to customise their new TW'14 shoes with a wider range of colours and personalisation options as well as two different uppers (waterproof or breathable) and two outsoles (spiked and spikeless).

Stayed tuned with Golfalot for more details and specifications on the Nike TW '14 shoes in the coming days, with a retail launch set for June 7th.

With the immediate success Tiger has found with the new shoes, it is no surprise he was smiling showing them off in this photo (below) he tweeted Monday. So far in 2013, Tiger has won four times in the seven events he's played on the PGA Tour.

For you golfing historians, this is just the second time in his career Tiger has won four events before June, doing so in 2000. How did he follow it up back then? Pretty well, he went on to win the next four majors to become the first person to hold all four modern majors at the same time. No wonder he's smiling!
