Golf betting guide with advice on how to bet

Golfalot's renowned golf betting tips are posted here by Tuesday every week. Our tips use a point system to rate the strength of a tip. A 1 point bet means placing your usual stake, which in our case is £10. Less than 1 point and you should be more cautious and greater than one point and the tip is hot!

EUROPEAN TOUR: Inteco Russian Open, 24 July

The par 72 Le Meridien plays host to an event which is fundamentally a strong Challenge Tour event. Coming hard on the heels of The Open most quality players skip this one.

OUTRIGHT: Frederick Andersson-Hed 1pt win or place 45/1

Not a huge play on this one but there is some value on Hed at these odds in such a weak field. Historically he plays well at this time of year and, true to form, he has started to play well recently with a top twenty finish last time out at Loch Lomond two weeks ago. Furthermore he finished in a tie for eighteenth place here in 2006.

PGA TOUR: RBC Canadian Open, 24 July 2008

The Jack Nicklaus designed par 71 Glen Abbey course was last used for this event in 2004 when the winner was Vijay Singh. In keeping with most Canadian Open venues the course is fairly tight and tree-lined and, in typical Nicklaus fashion, should favour players with a left to right ball flight.

OUTRIGHT: Mike Weir 1pt win or place 18/1

Despite an indifferent season and an unremarkable performance at last week’s Birkdale Open it is hard to ignore the local left hander Weir in this event. Canadian national Weir rates this event pretty much as a fifth Major and his backers can be assured on 100% effort and commitment this week. Most encouragingly he has the correct draw ball flight to go well here and so it is not too surprising that he finished runner-up to Vijay Singh here in 2004.

OUTRIGHT: Scott Verplank 1pt win or place 35/1

Like Weir, Verplank has strong positive mental associations with this event having won it last in 2001 at Royal Montreal. His left to right ball flight is ideally suited to the course and it is no surprise he finished inside the top ten here in 1998. Although he did not fare too well last week at Birkdale he did record a top twenty finish a few weeks back at the Buick Open.
