He is the man who has become synonymous with the rules of golf. Top international referee John Paramor has been keeping the world's best players in check for 34 years.
Golfalot met up with John as helped to launch Sidaro, the latest must have mobile accessory for golfers.
John's first experience of life on tour began when he caddied for Ryder Cup star Peter Butler for a season. Convinced he wanted to stay in the game but fearing he couldn't make it as a player John then jumped at the chance to become a tournament referee.
Since then he has rarely been far away from the action with a grandstand seat at some of golf's great events and a central role in some of the game's controversies.
In those 34 years golf has become a televised, global sport but how much has this scrutiny changed John's role: "Obviously we are aware that all our events are televised" he says."Every player is under scrutiny and we do have calls from a number of viewers who think they may have seen something."
But John remains convinced that golfer don't set out to bend the rules: "No, I don’t think so. I’m fairly confident that everybody out on the Tour does play by the rules or at least tries to. Occasionally they fall foul of them, but if anybody was trying to deliberately breach the rules, we’d find out pretty quickly."
Given the current focus on slow play John is adamant that golfers should be learning to trust their own judgement on the more simple rulings: "We normally cover events with six referees so it takes time to get a ruling and that time unfortunately does have an affect on the field. If we could get players more confident to proceed on their own then all the better."
After 34 years studying every rule in the book John is better placed than anyone to take the mystique out of the rules of golf: "They really are pretty straightforward, it's common sense."
"And if you do have that knowledge it can help you although there are also times when it can go against you! I think it is vitally important that people have a working knowledge of the rules."
All of which brings us round to Sidaro, a brand new mobile phone based application that offers live scoring, golf news and shot tracking along with a certain John Paramor in the role of quiz master.
Subscribers to Sidaro can test their practical knowledge of the rules in a series of questions that John has set. There are monthly prizes and the chance of a place in an annual play off at Wentworth.
John thinks the beauty of Sidaro is the chance to learn the rules from real situations rather than attempting to read through and memorise the Rules of Golf. As he says himself: "I wish we had something like that when I was starting out."
Given that the world's most famous rules official has set the rules do ordinary golfers stand any chance of scoring highly? "I'm sure I wouldn't get 100%," he laughs. "I'd like to meet the person who does get 100%."
Sidaro, which boasts content from the European Tour and Sky Sports along with John Paramor, is available now with a 14 day free trial. Visit www.sidaro.com to find out more.
