The event is played for the third year in succession at The Royal Johannesburg and Kensington courses. Although both courses have a par of 71 the longer East course is considerably harder than the West. One round is played on each course over the first two days then the closing rounds revert to the East course.

OUTRIGHT: Mark Murless 1 pt win or place 80/1 (Five Places)

Local boy Murless has yet to finish outside the top five in his two previous starts here so it may well pay to support him again this year.

OUTRIGHT: Tyrone Mordt 1 pt top 10 only 15/1

As with Murless this is Mordt’s home track so he will know the vagaries of the courses well. Mordt had a poor season on The Sunshine Tour until he recorded a notable top ten finish in The Dunhill event in December.

US Tour: Mercedes-Benz Championship, 8 January

The 7,400 yards long par 73 Plantation course with its four par 5s and 3 par 3s plays host this week to the elite winners on the 2007 PGA Tour. The large Bermuda greens are relatively slow with the harsh grain difficult to read. Long hitting, accurate iron play and good putting are the key skills required here. Players who have shown good form over the winter season tend to do well at this event.

Love resurrected a career seemingly in terminal decline with a victory in the season ending Children’s Miracle Classic in 2008. If he can maintain some of that form this week on a course which he has played well historically he can go close

OUTRIGHT: Trevor Immelman 1pt win or place 25/1 (Four Places)

Immelman’s form seemed to slump dramatically after his Master’s win in April but there were signs of recovery late season on the PGA Tour and in the SA Open in December where Immelman recorded a very respectable top ten finish. The Plantation course suits his game as he has already shown with a third place finish here in 2007.
